This beautifully carved, cedar portal welcomes visitors to Fraser River Heritage Park. The carved welcome posts figure prominently in doorways and are intended as a gesture of welcome to the traditional lands of the Matsqui, Sema:th, Kwantlen, Katzie, Sq’ewlets, and Leq’a:mel people. The artworks reflect the history of the local Indigenous people, as well as the modern culture that thrives today.
The house posts were completed in 2012 and the carver was Raphael Silver of the Sumas First Nation. They were carved as part of a healing process from the legacy of St. Mary’s Residential School.
